The Importance of Choosing the Right Baby Name

Ok my friend, it is now time to name that little hip baby
to yours. Picking names is one of the most difficult decisions. What is a sense in a name? I mean really, you do not want your child's name that means something DEMON SEED or anything. What's in a name? What works best with your family name? I mean, come on, you may want to skip Ben Dover or Frank Furter for example.

A name is so important, I mean, it can reach all the poor children to adulthood. It can affect self-esteem, it may also be a first printing of others. If you have been set up on a blind date with Dilbert or with a Jonathan, who would you choose? And you do not even see them? You're probably thinking "What kind of parents name their child Dilbert" and would result in "if they could name their son Dilbert, what other strange traits have the main" OK OK OK I do not want all the Dilbert for me and debate me, I myself am not a generalization I'm just trying to predict what others think. ... I mean .. uh Dilbert is a beautiful name.

Then you have to deal with your partner. You wouldn't want to name your daughter after his first love would you? And you probably don't want baby names that are so unique that when your child grows up and introduces theirself to others, all they hear is "what did you say your name was again?" On the other side, you don't want the name that is too trendy that in first grade your child has to go by their first name and their last initial. And you also want to be able to find their name on those cheesy license plates at the souvenir shops right? mmm... maybe that's still up in the air

Remember, this is only the first of many tough decisions you'll make in the life of your child. Why not start it off right. GOOD LUCK!

Some Baby Name Ideas for your New Child

Not long ago, one of the main trends of names here in the United States was to provide Irish names for both boys and girls. Irish names have been a great development in the U.S., particularly for boys. Only since the 90s that names such as Declan and Aidan were common among American children. One reason could be that the name Sean has become dominant in the 1980s. Parents are now even further to find Irish names that are unique to the United States.

But beyond the influence of Irish American names come from a variety of cultural sources. Among these are: English, Egyptian, Czechoslovakia, Gaelic, French, Italian and Hebrew. America has always been a melting pot of people of different ethnic origins. As such the name of a person here does not necessarily bind to a particular ethnic group; Indians give their children names English, Italian, Irish children are given names like "Sean". And of course, popular names are strongly influenced by the media by celebrities and businessmen. Dylan is passed as a popular name in the 70s, almost certainly because of the influence of Bob Dylan before the decade. Here are some popular or new baby names, their meaning or definition, and ethnicity:

Green Names?

What if you want to give your boy or girl an environmentally-sound name? Perhaps there's some inspiration you can draw from some famous historical figures for this. For baby boys, think Henry David Thoreau. In this case, Henry David would be all that’s needed to make the name recognizable. There's also Aldo Leopold, the author of the ecological classic, A Sand County Almanac. Aldo was an American ecologistand is considered a pioneer in environmental ethics and wilderness preservation. Another name that comes to mind is David Brower, an environmentalist activist who founded Friends of the Earth, the League of Conservation Voters, and other environmental organizations. For baby girls, one of the most famous environmentalists of all time was Rachel Carson. An American biologist, conservationist, and nature writer, Carson is helped increase environmental awareness around the world with her book, Silent Spring. The work spurred the banning of the pesticide DDT in the United States and helped spark the modern environmental movement. Also Carson makes a beautiful middle name. Another idea is Jane Goodall, a famous primatologist,

Youth Self Defense - How To Keep Your Child Safe Without Placing Them In Danger

So, how does youth self defense keep your child safe and not put them in danger? Read on and find out what is needed to protect your child from your child and everyone else.

With the introduction of the internet came international access to a variety of self defense products and defensive devices to protect all types of men and women. Items such as stun guns, Tasers, pepper spray and expandable steel batons have become a common assistant for many Americans. While these devices are great and most are very effective, they do have one huge drawback – they are not for children. So, how do you keep your child safe if they cannot carry the items made to keep people safe? The crazy thing is that children are most vulnerable and perhaps need the devices more than anyone. I guess it would be a bad idea to have millions of children running around with Tasers and big steel sticks, but we need to keep them safe nevertheless. Youth self defense will do just that.

I have been asked many times about youth self defense products. I always reply with just about the same answer. When asked my reply is usually “it depends on the age of the child”. A teenager can be taught to use a defensive device that is legal for almost anyone such as a kubotans or perhaps they may be served best by a good self defense course. If your child is younger it is best to educate them about the dangers of life including walking home from school and even being home alone. Education and awareness of ones surroundings are the keys for any successful self defense situation regardless of age.

After informing your child of the dangers of the world you may also want to arm them with a personal alarm and/or a quality youth self defense class. There are many personal alarms on the market today that will be an effective tool for children. My personal choice for a child would be the Stun Factory Banshee personal alarm. This devise is very small, comes in bright colors that kids like and is easily activated. When the strap is pulled, a small metal pin is pulled out of the alarm triggering its very loud siren. One of the best features is that when the strap and metal pin pulls out, it does not come out the entire way, preventing your child from losing the trigger strap. Other personal alarms will also be effective for children and some even come with strobe lights and other visual warning signals. Whatever alarm you choose be sure that it is at least 120 Db, any less and it may not be an effective youth self defense device. To find a self defense class for your child you can check your local phone book. There are classes designed just for children of almost any age. I suggest sitting in on a class before signing up to see if the instruction is what you are looking for.

Now you can arm your child without worrying if they will end up shocked, sprayed or knocked in the head by a baton. Using some of these youth self defense tips should provide a good start to protecting your child and keeping them safe from themselves. I must stress again that education and awareness of your surroundings may just be the most important thing you can do to keep them safe.

Tips For Maintaining Children's Toys

Toy maintenance is very maintenance to sanity and sanitation of your child's play area. Children will spend most of their day around these thing so don't be lazy about keeping up with these things. Remember some storage space, a couple cleaning tools and some sense of discretion is all that's really necessary to keep things running smooth in your household.

Before we even get to toy maintenance let's talk about which toys to get. First try to limit the amount of toys you get so you can avoid clutter in your home. Avoid buying similar toys not matter how much they want it as they will most likely get bored thus wasting space and your money. Try to get toys that are simple to manage and clean. Be sure to check if the stuffed toys you buy are machine washable to make it easy on yourself. It's hard to test the durability of toys that require assembly so try to find some reviews online about it. If in doubt it is always better to be safe than sorry so hold off for little on it.

Common sense says that toys can and will get dirty over time. Regular maintenance and inspection of all toys can keep your child from any mishaps or incidents that could have been otherwise easily avoided. Check to make sure not only that the toys are clean but also that the toys are still sturdy and stable to save your child from any physical accidents. Wash down toys with safe antibacterial cleaners with no harsh chemicals. This way you are sure your child is safe physically and health wise. Cleansing toys can guard against your children getting sick, so use antibacterial agents to assist.

Proper storage and rotation of toys is also important to maintain. A clean dry storage place is necessary to keep toys from flooding the floors and also prevent breaking any of them so your money is not wasted and your child's feelings spared. Regularly rotate toys so that your child will not get bored as quickly, even though they will still eventually, and this gives you time to inspect the toys not in use at the same time.

Supervision during playtime is necessary to avoid silly accidents that need not be. Watch that they play safe with their toys and not get too excited and hurt themselves due to reckless mobility. Lastly just use your head when it comes to keeping the play areas clean and all will be well.

Parenting Toddler SOS: My Biting Toddler is After Our Dog and the Baby!

Parenting Toddler Biting Question:

“Kelly, my 1.5 year old has taken to biting both the dog and the baby. I've tried many things and have read many parenting books but am still without a solution. What can I do? I am worried that he will either hurt our baby or the dog will hurt him”. - Mom Seeking Biting Solution

Parenting Solution to Biting Toddler:

When your sweet child turns into a household vampire, many Moms and Dads are unsure of what to do. Biting is common in toddlers—they lack the maturity and the vocabulary to express their frustration. While biting may be common, it does not mean you need to put up with it. There are plenty of ways to make biting less appealing to your toddler.

Here are five effective parenting toddler steps that can help you solve your biting problem once and for all:

1. Find your toddler's biting payoff: Ask yourself, "Why is my child biting?" For every negative misbehavior there is a powerful purpose—a pay-off for children. Find your child's pay-off and you will be pointed in the direction of the solution. My educated guess is that the biggest reward for your toddler's biting is your attention! With a new baby needing and demanding so much of your attention (especially if you are breast feeding every couple of hours) your oldest, now has to share your attention—something he never had to do before. A new sibling’s arrival heralds a new era for your toddler—an era in which the sun no longer rises and sets around him. This major life transition requires quite an adjustment from your first-born, who was used to having all your attention to himself.

When children aren't able to get enough of their parents' attention positively, they will settle for negative attention. Why? Because some attention is always better than none. So, biting is a powerful hook to take your attention away from the baby and bring it back to your toddler.

2. Remove the parenting toddler hook: As parents we can never truly change our child's behavior. We can influence it—but ‘make’ them do exactly what we want them to do, when we want them to do it—no. Children only change when they ultimately understand the benefit of the change. The good news is that by changing our reaction to their behavior, we can nudge them in the right direction and start experiencing the positive change we seek.

Decide to change your reaction to his biting. Instead of getting upset, raising your voice, threatening or using time-outs, put your emotions on hold and use a neutral tone. Use the same tone you would with the neighborhood grocer (polite but not overly engaged). Calmly and directly state, "Biting is not allowed." Then quickly hug your child and remove them from the room OR remove the baby or dog and go about your business. Turn your back on them if need be, but do not become engaged with them (other than the quick hug) at this time.

3. Discourage biting by consistently acting and follow through: Make certain you are not raising your voice, lecturing, yelling or biting back in any way. Any aggressiveness on your part will only teach your toddler that his behavior is appropriate. Each time he bites respond in the nonchalant manner recommended in step two—follow through each and every time.

4. Prevent biting behavior by giving your child what they really want and need: A little of your positive attention can go a long way. With the demands of a new baby, it can be next to impossible to carve out extra time to spend 1-on-1 with your toddler. Yet, if you don't give it to him, he will continue to demand it with negative behavior. Elicit the help of your husband, family, friends or even a nanny or babysitter to spend time with the baby so you can spend a little more happy play time with your toddler.

5. Notice when your toddler is doing well: I’ve saved the most powerful parenting toddler tip for last. When you see your toddler being gentle with the baby and dog, notice this by saying something like, "Look at how the baby loves to be touched by you when you are gentle. She is lucky to have a big brother like you."
Biting is an unfortunate solution many toddlers have found to coerce their parents into giving them attention. If parents change their tune by not giving much attention when toddlers demand it, instead giving their attention when their child is doing things they appreciateFeature Articles, they will soon find that biting is reserved for favorite

Parenting: Baby’s Naptime

If you baby is not napping well during her first few months of life, you may want to try to cut back on the time she is awake by 15 minute increments. If she is getting overstimulated, then she will fight sleep and be difficult to get to nap. The way to prevent this is to watch her “sleepy” cues to make sure that you put her down when she is beginning to get sleepy.

Some parents believe that letting their child cry will harm him or her. Fifteen or twenty minutes of crying will not harm your child physically or mentally. Babies will learn to self-soothe and fall asleep by themselves, but only if you let her. It is very important that babies learn to fall asleep by themselves so that they can self-soothe if they awake in the middle of the night. Otherwise, you may have a child that will not sleep through the night for years.

Regular sleep patterns are intermeshed with regular eating patterns, so let us look at the stages of a baby’s life:

* Newborn: Your newborn will sleep anywhere from 16 to 20 hours a day, including the naps that he takes between feedings. When your baby has been fed, let him stay awake for a short while and then put him down before he becomes overstimulated.

* Two months: At two months and older, your child should be allowed to try to self-soothe during their naptimes and bedtime. Crying is normal when you put your baby down, but it is okay. If he cries for longer than 10-15 minutes, then go in and check on him. Don’t get him up, but pat his bottom or lightly rub his back until he calms down.

* 3-6 months: At around 3-6 months, your baby will stop taking one of his naps. Usually it is the third nap or late afternoon nap that they do not need as much. He may be a little fussy and may want to take a little nap, but you need to try to keep him up if you want him to go to bed at a decent time and sleep soundly through the night.

* 16+ months: When your child is between 16-20 months, they usually quit taking the morning nap in favor of a longer nap in the afternoons. Babies this age usually sleep between 10-12 hours a night and take a 2-3 hour afternoon nap.

Ground Rules about Naps
1. You decide when the nap starts and ends, not the baby.
2. When your baby is older than 4 months old, she will wake up crying if she hasn’t slept enough. She might have a dirty diaper, be in a position that is not comfortable, or cold/hot. Fix the problem and encourage her to go back to sleep. Babies that have enough rest wake up happy, talkingHealth Fitness Articles, and in a good mood.
